ANKARA, TURKEY — Dreaming of a dirham (a silver coin) is evaluated in Islamic dream interpretation across a wide spectrum, ranging from a person's family life and economic situation to the words they will utter and the positions they will attain.
The color of the dirham, its condition (whether intact or broken), and the amount in the dreamer's possession completely alter the course of the interpretations. Prominent dream scholars such as Imam Ja'far al-Sadiq, Ibn Sirin, Kirmani, and Ismail Ash'as guide dreamers by explaining dirham dreams in detail.
Imam Ja'far al-Sadiq (a.s): 12 different interpretations and the broken dirham
Imam Ja'far al-Sadiq (a.s) explains seeing a sound dirham in a dream through 12 different fundamental concepts. These positive concepts are: True words, fulfilling a need, guardianship (authority), accumulated wealth, a friend, a child, a companion, abundant sustenance, being safe, a concubine, high rank, and degree.
However, a broken dirham seen in a dream carries negative meanings and is explained by four interpretations: Ugly words, war and hostility, handcuffs and prison, and argument.
Ibn Sirin: A sound dirham is for good, a broken one is for lies
Ibn Sirin focuses on the physical condition of the dirham in the dream and how the person acquires this money:
-
Sound and broken dirhams: While a sound dirham is interpreted as good; a defective or broken dirham points to a lie.
-
Few dirhams: A person seeing a small amount of dirhams indicates they will hear beautiful words or will shout the word of Tawhid (Oneness of God).
-
Receiving and losing dirhams: Someone giving the dreamer a pouch full of dirhams points to a consultation that will be held with that person but will result in misguidance; the loss or theft of a dirham points to sorrow regarding one's children.
Ibn Sirin also states that seeing the heads side of a black dirham will lead to war and hostility, while simply seeing a dirham in a dream means that money will be obtained in real life as well.
Kirmani and Ismail Ash'as: Halal property, children, and words to be heard
Kirmani emphasizes the importance of the amount of dirhams and the action performed by the dreamer:
-
Having a dirham in hand: Seeing one white dirham in the palm is interpreted as having a child, and the loss of the dirham signifies the death of (or harm to) the child.
-
A bundle full of dirhams: Finding a bundle full of dirhams in the house indicates acquiring property equal to the amount seen; sharing a dirham with a spouse points to an inconclusive conversation.
-
Seeing an abundant amount of dinars and dirhams together is a harbinger of the person accumulating halal (lawful) wealth. However, collecting a large amount of dirhams (greedily) can indicate keeping people away from the path of truth.
Ismail Ash'as, focusing on the color and appearance of the dirham, provides the following interpretations: According to Ash'as, a black dirham is better than a white dirham in terms of interpretation. A visually beautiful dirham points to happiness in this world and the hereafter, while a bad dirham points to being deprived of this happiness. Dirhams kept in a money pouch represent the words the person will hear; whereas a silver dirham is directly interpreted as acquiring material gain and property.
