ISTANBUL, TURKEY — Dreaming of a dinar (a gold coin) is generally associated in Islamic dream interpretation with a person's level of knowledge, religious faith, family life, and the responsibilities they undertake.
The number of dinars seen in the dream, how they are acquired, and the symbols depicted on them are considered by scholars as crucial details that carry vastly different meanings. Prominent interpreters such as Imam Ja'far al-Sadiq, Ibn Sirin, and Kirmani point out that gold in a dream reflects not only material wealth but also one's spiritual state and life duties.
Imam Ja'far al-Sadiq (a.s): Knowledge and faith
Imam Ja'far al-Sadiq (a.s) interprets seeing a dinar in a dream in various ways depending on its number:
-
Five dinars: Signifies the five daily prayers.
-
Even-numbered dinars: Indicates pure faith and useful knowledge, whereas an odd number of dinars is interpreted as the opposite.
-
Losing or giving dinars: Seeing that you give a dinar to someone, or that your dinars disappear or are stolen, means that your sorrows and troubles will be eliminated.
-
Receiving four dinars: It is reported that a person who receives four dinars from someone will gain honor and status through women.
Prophet Daniel (a.s) and Ibn Sirin: Knowledge, home, and hardship
Prophet Daniel (a.s) states that seeing more than four dinars points to encountering a troublesome matter and hearing words that will be heavy to bear. However, even if the number of dinars is large, if the dreamer knows the exact count, it indicates that the hardships experienced will be lighter.
The interpretations of Ibn Sirin focus mainly on knowledge and property:
-
Five dinars: A sign that you will do a good deed.
-
Receiving a dinar from an acquaintance: A person who sees they have a dinar that is neither big nor small will own a new but small house provided by the familiar person who gave the dinar.
-
Many dinars and knowledge: Seeing you have a hundred or a thousand dinars is interpreted as learning knowledge; giving a dinar to someone or losing it means acquiring knowledge and experience equal to the amount lost.
Kirmani and Ismail Ash'as: Children, prayer, and trust
Kirmani expresses that a dinar seen in a dream can sometimes manifest exactly the same way (like finding a dinar) in real life without the need for interpretation.
-
Children and calamity: Having a dinar or receiving one from someone is a sign of having a child; seeing the dinar lost indicates suffering a calamity concerning one's children.
-
Five dinars and prayer: Seeing five dinars in the palm points to performing the five daily prayers, while seeing two of them lost indicates neglecting some prayers.
-
Trust and minting: Finding a large amount of dinars and hiding them means the person is a reliable trustee; minting (manufacturing) dinars is interpreted as commanding people to do good and protecting entrusted items.
Ismail Ash'as draws attention to the details on the dinar. A beautiful dinar without pictures means religion and the right path. However, if a dinar has an image of an idol on one side and the name of Allah on the other, this dream is considered a harbinger of a radical change in belief or confusion (becoming an apostate or becoming a Muslim).
