Seeing Allah in a dream: Is it possible and what does it mean?

DREAMS WISDOM / ISTANBUL, TURKEY — JAN. 4, 2026

In Islamic culture, where dreams are often seen as a conduit for spiritual messages, scholars have long debated and affirmed the possibility of seeing the Divine. According to classical sources, it is considered possible and permissible to see Allah in a dream, just as it is to see Prophet Muhammad. Historical texts contain numerous narrations of individuals who reported seeing Allah in their sleep and even speaking with Him.

Prophet Muhammad himself is reported to have stated that he saw his Lord in a dream and spoke with Him. This foundation has led Islamic scholars to agree that such visions are valid, though they come with specific theological nuances regarding the nature of what is actually seen.

The Prophet's experience and the Mi'raj

The concept of seeing the Divine is deeply rooted in the Prophet's own experiences. Some scholars have even interpreted the event of Mi'raj (the Ascension), where the Prophet ascended to the heavens, as a vision seen during sleep.

Scholars of the Salaf (early generations) maintain that while it is true that the Prophet saw Allah, the "how" or modality of this vision remains unknown. There is a consensus among scholars that seeing Allah in a dream is possible and permissible. However, they clarify a critical theological point: what the dreamer sees is a manifestation or symbol suitable for their understanding, not the actual Essence (Dhat) of Allah, which is beyond form.

A sign of paradise and accepted deeds

For the ordinary believer, such a dream is regarded as a profoundly positive omen. Renowned dream interpreters such as Ibn Sirin (d. 110/729), al-Dinawari (d. 410/1020), and al-Nablusi (d. 1143/1731) have commented on the meanings of this vision.

According to these experts, seeing Allah in a dream carries very beautiful meanings. Specifically, it is interpreted as a sign that the dreamer's deeds and worship have been accepted. Furthermore, it is considered a herald that the person will eventually enter Paradise.
