Prophet Muhammad's guide: How to neutralize the harm of bad dreams
Dreams can impact physical health. Prophet Muhammad advised spitting to the left, praying, and maintaining silence to avoid the psychological and spiritual harm of nightmares.

It is a known fact that dreams can have a profound effect on individuals, sometimes even manifesting as physical ailments. Islamic historical sources recount the case of Abu Salama, a figure from the generation following Prophet Muhammad, who fell ill purely under the influence of the dreams he witnessed. Recognizing this psychological and spiritual impact, Prophet Muhammad provided specific guidance on how to neutralize the potential harm of bad dreams.
The Prophet's advice bridges spiritual practice with psychological protection, suggesting that a believer can strip a nightmare of its power through specific actions and, crucially, through silence.
The 3-step remedy for nightmares
According to Hadith sources, Prophet Muhammad advised that when a person sees a distressing dream, they should not remain passive. His recommendations include:
-
Spit to the left: The Prophet said, "When one of you sees a bad dream, let him spit (dryly) to his left side three times and seek refuge in Allah from its evil." If this is done, the dream will not harm the person.
-
Change state: In another narration, he suggested that the person should get up from their bed and perform prayer (Salah), and not narrate the dream to anyone.
-
The Bird's Foot Analogy: The Prophet metaphorically stated that a dream remains "suspended on the foot of a bird" as long as it is not told. However, once it is narrated and interpreted, it falls and occurs.
The rule of silence: Why you shouldn't tell
One day, a Bedouin came to the Prophet and said, "I saw in my dream that my head was cut off and I was chasing after it." The Prophet immediately stopped him, saying, "Do not tell people how Satan plays with you in your dream".
This guidance is rooted in psychology; sharing a bad dream can lead to negative interpretations, causing the dreamer to expect a bad outcome. This expectation itself can be damaging. The relief provided by this knowledge is evident in Abu Salama's testimony: "I used to feel the effect of a (bad) dream heavier than a mountain upon me, but after hearing this Hadith, I no longer care about it".
Share good dreams only with loved ones
While silence is prescribed for nightmares, Prophet Muhammad encouraged sharing positive visions, but with a strict caveat: "When one of you sees a good and beautiful dream, let him tell it only to someone he loves".
Scholars suggest this is because those who love you will interpret the dream favorably, providing spiritual joy and motivation. Conversely, sharing a blessing with those who may be envious or ignorant could lead to a twisted interpretation, potentially causing distress or dampening the good news.
